Distressed Kalvin Phillips is optimistic that one of the most challenging periods in his professional life is nearing its conclusion. Since his loan move to West Ham United last month, the Manchester City midfielder has had a series of unfortunate events and underwhelming performances.
The midfielder aspires to rectify his problematic beginning at the London Stadium. After making mistakes in matches against Bournemouth and Manchester United, he received a red card in the game against Nottingham Forest for receiving two yellow cards in rapid succession.
He had anticipated that the relocation would provide an opportunity for a new beginning. “According to the belief that bad luck occurs in groups of three, I hope that I have experienced my three instances of misfortune and can now make progress,” he stated.
“I desired this to be a new beginning, where I could fully concentrate and make a determined effort.” The outcome has not aligned with my desired expectations. It is evident to all observers.
“However, I possess knowledge and expertise in the sport of football.” I possess the expertise to understand that by focusing diligently and persevering while executing fundamental tasks effectively, positive outcomes will ensue. Verbalizing the task may seem effortless, but now I am faced with the challenge of actually executing it.
Phillips has faced difficulties in adapting to the demands of the Premier League due to his limited playing time for City in the past year. Highlighting the significance of game practice for enhancing performance levels, he stated: “There are specific actions that must be executed on a football field. Indeed, I had the privilege of training with the most exceptional team on the planet. However, it is through engaging in actual games that one’s skills are honed and refined.
“No matter how much you train, you will not achieve optimal physical fitness and mental sharpness for a match unless you actively participate in games, don’t you agree?” Hence, that is the cause of my frustration and deep disappointment.
Phillips displayed clear signs of distress after receiving two yellow cards during their match against Forest. West Ham was behind in the match when Taiwo Awoniyi scored in the first half. Phillips received two rapid yellow cards in the second half, the first for struggling with Nicolas Dominguez and the second for fouling Morgan Gibbs-White.
He attempted to communicate with referee Thomas Bramall following the match, but departed the City Ground feeling dissatisfied.
“I am frustrated with myself regarding the initial reservation.” “He has a firm grip on my shoulder, and despite my attempts to remove his hold, I have been unsuccessful. Perhaps in the future, I should consider using the ball as a means to assert my position,” he stated.
“I felt exasperated and our team was experiencing a decline in performance.” However, it is a valuable experience from which I will gain knowledge and insights.
