Bruno Fernandes collected his first red card for Manchester United during the team’s defeat to Tottenham.
The decision to send Bruno Fernandes off during Manchester United’s defeat against Tottenham elicited a strong reaction.
While it had an impact on the game, it was unlikely to influence the outcome, as Manchester United were so bad that Tottenham were obviously the stronger team even when it was 11 versus 11.
Fernandes stated after the game that he believed the judgment was incorrect and that he should have earned a yellow card for his high tackle on James Maddison.
Ange Postecoglou on Bruno Fernandes’ Red
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou was asked about the situation following the game and gave his thoughts.
Postecoglou said that Fernandes was sent off because Tottenham were so dominating that the Manchester United midfielder made the wrong judgment to rush in for a challenge.
He briefed the press: “Their red card is a consequence of our dominance, we put them under so much pressure, they couldn’t really get out of their half.”
Tottenham were leading 1-0 at the time, and Postecoglou believed it could have been more, saying, “We probably should have been out of sight by that stage with the chances we had.”
The visiting team went on to win 3-0, finishing with 61% possession and 24 shots on United’s goal.
This was a significant step back for United, since it was their second consecutive home Premier League game that ended in a 3-0 loss, after the encounter against Liverpool.
Manchester United shouldn’t be overpowered at home.
Manchester United were the home team, and they should have dominated every match played at Old Trafford.
Fans are frustrated up with this not being the case. Tottenham had an Expected Goals number of 4.67, whereas United got off lightly.
Questions are being raised about Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag’s future, and performances like these, along with poor results, leave him with nowhere to hide.
Postecoglou’s views are unquestionable; Tottenham were dominant, and Fernandes’ bad challenge in an unnecessary area was most likely the result.
It’s debatable if the challenge deserved a red card, but Fernandes’ foul was unnecessary.
