Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes believes he should not have been sent off against Tottenham on Sunday and has stated that James Maddison agrees with him.
Spurs crushed the Red Devils 3-0 at Old Trafford, with their skipper receiving a red card after only 42 minutes.
The Portuguese slid before attempting to charge Maddison, and in the clumsy tackle, he caught the Tottenham player in the shin.
The referee was fast to show a straight red, and VAR did not interfere, despite the fact that the Sky Sports studio agreed it should have been a yellow.
Fernandes was taken aback by the severity of his punishment, and he claims Maddison felt the same way.
‘It’s part of sneaking in, I don’t take him how everyone wants to see it, I don’t go with the studs, I take him with my ankle, it’s a blatant foul but never a red card, that’s my opinion,’ Fernandes told Sky Sports.
‘Even Maddison, when he gets up, says it’s a foul but not a red card.
In everyone’s views, it’s never a red card, because if it is, I believe we need to look at many more events, many occasions where I’ve been kicked, and I’ve never seen something as swift as a red card.
‘I just believe it is never a red card. If he wants to award a yellow for a counter-attack, I agree, but I don’t see why VAR doesn’t bring the referee to the screen. For me, it’s just not a good idea.

‘It was challenging to cover all of the spaces, but there are many positive takeaways from this. I’m proud of the squad.
