In order to win their first European championship, England hopes to defeat Spain in the Euro 2024 final. It’s said that Gareth Southgate has already selected his squad.
There are rumours that when England plays Spain in the Euro 2024 final, manager Gareth Southgate will not start three stars. For their meeting at the Olympiastadion in Berlin for the European Championship, Three Lions boss is probably going to go with the same lineup. Luke Shaw, Cole Palmer, and Ollie Watkins won’t be playing for the club.
Watkins made headlines in the semi-final with a valiant bench cameo. He entered the game in the 81st minute, after Southgate’s bold decision to substitute captain Harry Kane.
It paid off after nine minutes, when Watkins’ exquisite low shot beat Bart Verbruggen and found the bottom corner to take England to the championship game.
The Telegraph and other news sources claim that Palmer, a great player for Chelsea who also entered and assisted with a lovely through pass to set up the goal, and the Aston Villa striker will be kept off the pitch once more. Shaw has demonstrated his fitness, but he will not be starting either.
Southgate has requested that Kane be substituted due of his recent poor performance for England. With three goals in six games, Kane is a contender for the Golden Boot award at Euro 2024.
Nevertheless, the 53-year-old has shown little willingness to alter his starting lineup during the competition, and it is unlikely that he will do so now, just before the match that will determine the fate of his eight-year reign.
Despite his 19 goals and 13 assists in the Premier League, Watkins has already expressed his frustration at only being able to substitute twice during the competition.
“This has been the best season of my career; I don’t like sitting on the bench,” Watkins told the media following the Netherlands’ victory. “Recently, I’ve been clearly getting a little angry.”
“I received a text from some buddies telling me to wait. It was absurd how many texts I received tonight claiming that I would score when I played. I’m hoping they can either do the same thing for the final or give me the lottery numbers.
It’s also likely that Southgate will continue with Kieran Trippier. Trippier will start ahead of Shaw, as he did in the 2-1 victory over the Netherlands on Wednesday. After missing many months due to a hamstring injury, Shaw has fully recovered. He entered the game against Switzerland and the Netherlands as a substitute, putting him in the running to open the scoring.
