Sergio Gomez is the most recent member of Manchester City’s summer roster to depart the Etihad on a permanent basis.
Sergio Gomez, who recently completed an £8.4 million transfer to Real Sociedad, talked about his incredible time at Manchester City.
Gomez, 23, was first signed as a 2022 prospect by the Blues, but after the team withdrew from the fight to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton, he was quickly thrown into Pep Guardiola’s starting lineup. Both a player and a supporter of City, Gomez recorded his first assist in a Manchester Derby, helping to set up Erling Haaland’s third goal in the 6-3 victory in October 2022.
Nevertheless, the defender found it difficult to receive consistent playing time in his two years at the team, even though Joao Cancelo’s 2023 loan departure reduced competition. Manu Akanji, Josko Gvardiol, and Nathan Ake have all been favoured to replace Gomez in the starting lineup.
Even though Gomez played in a more advanced role at the Under-21 European Championship with Spain last summer due to a lack of playing time at City, Real Sociedad saw enough potential in the youngster to buy him permanently for a fee as high as £8.4 million (€10 million). In addition, the agreement gives City a 30% sell-on clause, which means the Blues may get their entire investment back on a player they paid £11 million (€13 million) for.
With the addition of Gomez, City’s summer sales have now reached almost £40 million, including payments for Douglas Luiz, Tommy Doyle, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis. It is anticipated that Liam Delap will spend an additional £20 million to join Ipswich.
“It’s time to leave Manchester City but I’d like to thank everyone at the City Football Academy for their support and guidance during my time at the club,” Gomez stated. Being a member of a team with such much skill, ambition, and achievement was an incredible privilege, and I will always remember and cherish the many significant trophies we won, including the Treble.
“I am excited for this new adventure but I wish Pep Guardiola and the players every success in the future.”
